A.L. Rhodes, 88, passed away December 8, 2014 in Breckenridge, TX. Visitation will be 10:00 till 11:30 AM, on Friday, December 12, 2014 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral will begin at 11:30 AM, following the visitation on Friday in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow the service in Elmwood Memorial Park.
He leaves his wife, Louise stepdaughter, Christy Messer two stepgrandchildren his only sister, Majuahata Jo Rhodes Smith nieces, nephews and many close friends.
He was born and raised in the rural area of Jones County, the son of Jake and Mary Rhodes and a longtime resident of Abilene, Texas.
A.L. was his given name, but he was better known to family as Hooter, nicknamed as a boy by his grandfather, because he loved the old west movie star, Hoot Gibson. He was a WWII veteran and served in the Pacific till the end of the war. He was employed with the Borden milk company for many years and had many stories of making ice cream and having to repair giant ice cream machines. His expertise was electronics and he worked for Nemco, until he retired in the 1990s. He had an impeccable work ethic and true devotion to his wife and family. He met his first wife, Faye, of 50 years, in Abilene where they lived until her death in the 2003. He and Faye never had children but they claimed all their nieces and nephews as their own and for the most part tried to stay active in their lives. He met Louise at Lakeside Baptist Church in Breckenridge and they were married in 2007.
Mr. Rhodes had a passion for gardening and loved camping and fishing, spending many hours of his off time doing all three.
He was preceded in death by his parents his first wife, Faye his brother, John C. Rhodes and niece, Pam Rhodes Reed.
