Alene Dorman

June 11, 1920 — April 22, 2018

Alene Birdwell Dorman, the daughter of Eli Moore Birdwell and Mattie Beatrice Pringle Birdwell, was born June 11, 1920 in Novice, Texas. She departed this life on Sunday, April 22, 2018.
Alene accepted Christ at an early age and was a long-standing member of the Abilene First United Methodist Church. She remained a faithful servant there, gracing each service and participating in the Bible Sunday School Class until her health slowed her the past few years.

Alene was absolutely devoted to loved ones, particularly her daughters Charlotte and Debbie. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, Bethany, Jordan, Amie, and Cody.
Alene graduated high school with honors and began her post secondary studies at North Texas State University at the age of 16. She would also later earn a Master's Degree from Hardin Simmons University. After earning a degree in education, she first taught in Silver Valley and Coleman schools. During and shortly after WW II. Alene worked at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS, as a civilian B 24 technical and maintenance instructor. After this stint, Alene returned to teaching in Orange and finally in Abilene, where she would teach for many years until her retirement from Bonham Elementary in 1980.

In 1960, Alene was married to the love of her life, Dale Dorman. Alene and Dale enjoyed each other's company and spent much time traveling the country and square dancing the night away at the Wagon Wheel. This active lifestyle garnered Alene many lifelong friends.

Even in retirement Alene led a vibrant life. Alene stayed active and frequented the YMCA for exercise, served as a Pink Lady at the Hendrick Hospital gift shop, and was an active member in the Abilene Retired Teachers Association.

Alene possessed a keen sense of observation and rare ability to accept and respect people for who they were. She never met a stranger, and her grace touched all with whom she came in contact.

Alene was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Dorman; and sister, Opal Daniel. Alene is survived by two children, Charlotte Ely of Abilene, and Debbie Bass and husband Ricky of Pagosa Springs; four grandchildren, Bethany Ely Estrada and husband Mark, Jordan Ely, Amie Bass, and Cody Bass and wife Cheyenne; six great grandchildren, Kamerahn Bass, Cole Bass, Evan Estrada, Eli Estrada, Annemarie Estrada, and Benjamin Estrada.
