Alvin Gilbert

December 16, 1919 — January 10, 2013

Alvin Edward Gilbert, 93, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2013 in Abilene. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 14th in the Wisteria Place Chapel, 3202 S. Willis with interment following in Elmwood Memorial Park.

Alvin was born on December 16, 1919 in Auburn, New York the son of William Gilbert and Marietta Almy Gilbert. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and married Eleanor Clara Van Boven in Rochester, New York on August 30, 1943. Alvin worked as a firefighter in Texas City, Texas for 25 years before retiring and moving to Abilene in 1994. He was a life member of the Military Order of the Cooties and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors include his children, Penny Pope and husband Howard of Abilene, and Brad Gilbert and wife Carolyn of Stephenville three grandchildren, Jeff Pope and wife Judy, Randy Pope and wife AnnMarie, and Carol Dawn Gilbert five greatgrandchildren, Brendan, Allison, Lauren, Harrison and Gregory Pope and one sister, Connie Comstock and husband Harold of Houston.

His wife Eleanor and his brother, Myron preceded him in death.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
