Armando "Edmund" Alvarez, 75, of Abilene passed away Saturday, April 30th, 2016, at his residence in Abilene, TX. Armando was born in Ballinger, TX to Alberto and Josephine Alvarez on October 14th, 1940. He graduated from Ballinger High School in 1960, and joined the United States Air Force shortly thereafter. On April 24, 1966 he married the love his life Teresa Villarreal in Ballinger, TX, and they recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. He was a truly amazing man who left behind a beautiful legacy. He served our country for 20 years and worked civil service until his retirement in 2005. He was devout Catholic, a 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus, and raised a strong family. He was a selfless and loving man and the biggest Texas Longhorn fan ever. He was an avid sports enthusiast and his greatest passion was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Armando is survived by his wife, Teresa Alvarez of Abilene; two daughters, Sabrina Szmigielski and husband Ben of Ft. Worth, TX, and Debbie Sandberg and husband Erik, of Sugarland, TX; a son, Ron Deos and wife Jennifer of Abilene, TX; four grandchildren, Christopher Silvas and his wife Sarah, Kristen Deos, Audrey Sandberg, and Erika Sandberg; and six loving great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, and 1 sister; surviving siblings include Antonio Alvarez, of San Antonio, TX, Ruby Jean Saenz of Lexington, KY, Freddy Alvarez of Ft. Worth, TX and Linda Guevara of San Angelo, TX; also survived by many nieces and nephews
Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church on Dyess AFB in Abilene, TX. Burial will follow at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South with a rosary following.
