Arthur Shorty Clayton Hoffman, Jr., 67, passed from this life on January 11, 2012 at a hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Visitation will be 6 till 8 PM, Sunday, January 15, 2012 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral will be 1:00 PM, Monday, January 16, 2012 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow the service at the Aspermont Cemetery in Aspermont, Texas.
Mr. Hoffman was born on April 15, 1944 in Lockney, Texas, to Ora Mae Petty and Arthur Clayton Hoffman, Sr. He received the nickname Shorty as the manager of the basketball team at Plainview High School and earned the Athletic Letter Award before leaving Plainview and graduating from Lawton High School, in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Shorty worked all over the state of Texas. He worked for Ponca Wholesale in Plainview Santa Fe Railroad in Lubbock General Dynamics in White Settlement Orkin, Bandag, Lee Medical Supply, Foremost Milks, and Bordens Inc. in Abilene and Liberty Trucking Company in Aspermont. He retired from both NL Industries in Sweetwater and Exxon in Odessa. After his second retirement in 1994, he and Cheryl moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas, where he worked for and retired from WalMart in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Shorty loved talking with people, especially on his frequent visits to WalMart where he spent more time talking to the employees than he did shopping. When at home, he loved watching sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys. He and his wife also enjoyed watching the wildlife out their front window, being entertained by their cats, and visiting with their friends and neighbors.
Shorty was also a loving man who lived his life in service of others. In fact, because he chose to be an organ donor, his last act of service saved the lives of four people in Nebraska, Missouri, and Texas.
In addition to these four unknown people, he is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Cheryl, of Bella Vista, Arkansas a daughter and her husband, Michelle and David Daniel of Abilene, Texas a son and his wife, Barry and Cindy Hughey of Leander, Texas and three grandchildren, Brittany and Erricka Daniel of Abilene, Texas, and Leah Hughey of Leander, Texas. He is also survived by a brother and his wife, Gene and Barbara Hoffman of Helotes, Texas, and a sisterinlaw, Agnes Draper of Houston, Texas, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Shorty was preceded in death by his grandmother who raised him, Florence Petty Martin his mother, his father and his brother, Jimmy Draper.
