Berta Nell Tarrant, age 75, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 in her home in Justin, Texas.
Berta was born October 11, 1947 in Slaton, Texas to Chester and Betty (Hagler) Campbell. She graduated from Abilene High School in 1966; her adult life was full of laughter, family, and unconditional love.
Berta was 19 years old when she married Larry Tarrant in 1966, and was pregnant with their first child just one month later. To know Berta was to know that her family was her everything, and she worked hard to support them. As her family grew, Berta took on a variety of roles: carpooler, assistant coach, office manager, babysitter, even lunch lady. She became a “jane of all trades” in the medical office field, establishing herself as an essential member of her various teams. Berta was always the first person to call in a pinch, whether you needed a referral to a local doctor or someone to pick up your kids from school. Being around Berta meant you were family; you were welcome in her home in every sense of the word. She met each challenge in life with a delicious meal and a stubborn refusal to give up.
As Berta’s family grew, so did her ability to create a home full of love and joy. Walking into Berta’s house meant sitting down to a domino game, eating some homemade ice cream, and laughing until your sides hurt. She loved taking “sister trips” and going to family reunions, where she could always be found in the middle of the biggest group of people having the most fun. Berta adored her grandchildren, and was always willing to pull them in a red wagon around the neighborhood or go watch a football game out of town if it meant spending time with them. With the soundtrack of Texas Rangers baseball, classic hymns in the CD player and kids’ laughter playing in the background, your time spent with Berta would feel like being home.
She is survived by her daughter, Sherese and husband, Paul; daughter, Denise; daughter, Marsha and husband, Jason; 5 grandchildren: granddaughter, Caty and husband, Justin; grandson, Jordan and wife, Erika; granddaughter, Bailee and husband, Trace; grandson, Dale, and grandson, Brady; 2 great grandchildren: great granddaughter, Kinleigh and great granddaughter, Dakota; 8 brothers and their families, 7 sisters and their families, and her aunt, Etta Dee. Berta was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Betty, and her husband, Larry.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 3, at 10:00am at Broadview Baptist Church, 2500 South 27th St, Abilene, Texas with the burial taking place immediately after at Elmwood Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 5750 US 277 South, Abilene, Texas. The visitation will take place on Thursday, March 2, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Elmwood Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
According to one of Berta’s favorite hymns, “When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, we’ll sing and shout the victory!” There’s no doubt that Berta is rejoicing with Jesus today. Though she is missed by many here on this earth, her heart and spirit will forever live on with her family and friends.
To support the family through sending flowers, orders can be placed through Elmwood Funeral Home. Additionally, you can show support to the family in the form of a donation in Berta’s name to the ALS Association of Texas.
