Beth Tiller, a 62-year resident of Abilene, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at a local hospital. She had celebrated her 80th birthday with family and friends on April 4th at Christian Village of Abilene. Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 26 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South with Bill Spann, Buck Hood and Mike Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday.
Clora Beth Sutphen was born to Robert Bob Sutphen and Jewell Conaway Sutphen on April 4, 1929 in Wink, Texas. She graduated from Ballinger High School and came to Abilene with her best friend Doris Tiller to attend Abilene Christian College. She married John V. Bostick in July 1947 after he returned from World War II. They raised their family together in Abilene, and Beth went back to ACC and received her teaching degree in 1966. She taught 3rd grade at Reagan Elementary, and John was a Captain with the Abilene Police Department. She lost John to cancer in April 1983 and later retired from AISD in May 1988. Beth married life-long friend Rodney G. Tiller in May 1994 and lost him to cancer in March 1999. She was a charter member of Woodlawn Church of Christ, Row 6.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, John Bostick and Rod Tiller, daughter, Linda McCollough, sons, Tim and Dale, daughters-in-law, Annette and Barbara, and brother, Gene Sutphen.
She is survived by one brother, Bob Sutphen and wife Joyce of Abilene; son, John Bostick and wife Paula of California and their children, Derek and Hannah; son-in-law, Richard McCollough and wife Melba of Abilene and their children, Adam and Jennifer McCollough of Ohio, April and Daniel Lasater of San Antonio, Brittany and Dennis Hahn of Wichita Falls, and Ryan and Kerri McCollough of Abilene; 6 great-grandchildren, Automne Caroline McCollough, Abbey J.D. Lasater, Makenzie Hahn, and Rylee McCollough; her extended family, Mark Tiller of Houston and son Alek; Rhonda Cochran and her children, Doug Amanda Cochran and Lisa Andy Bayley all of Midland, along with extended great-grandchildren, Mitchell Mason Cochran, Jaxson, Kenna Levi Bayley; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Although Beth seemingly suffered more than her share of pain and heartache, she was a tower of strength, and her gracious spirit and positive attitude will live on through the many lives she touched. Her ever-present smile will be missed by those who loved her. A special thank you to her dear friend, Carol Wilson, for her love and devotion to Beth over the years. The love and support of Beths cousin, Jim Haller and wife Barbara and Bob and Joyce made these last few weeks easier to bear.
