Betty Jo Layland, 82, died Tuesday, April 1, 2008 in Abilene. Her graveside service, with the Reverend Kevin Uekert officiating, will be held at Noon on Thursday, April 3 in the Garden of Prayer at Elmwood Memorial Park under the direction of Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South.
Betty Jo was born on February 18, 1926 in Cedar Gap, the daughter of Arthur D. Coats and Mildred Presley Coats. She grew up in Abilene and graduated from Abilene High School in 1943. During WW II she was active with the USO at Camp Barkley and worked with Western Union. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.
Betty Jo was a fun loving person who dedicated her life to taking care of her family and friends. She was constantly active in the lives of her children, from serving as room mother, to helping with homework and making many, many wonderful meals. Later in life, she cared for neighbors and friends, taking them to appointments, and making sure they had hot meals.
Survivors include daughter, Georgia Brown Jackson and husband Robert of Austin and their family, Ashly Jackson and her daughter Mya, and Cade Jackson all of Austin; daughter; Suzanne Casey and husband Gary of Abilene and their children, Daniel Casey and wife Cassidi of Dallas, Brian Casey and wife Lacey of Abilene, and Caroline Casey of Abilene.
Her husband, Leon Layland, preceded her in death.
