Billy B. McClure died Sunday May 26, 2008, at his home after a lengthy illness. Bill McClure was born Sept. 21, 1921, in Abilene, Texas, and was a graduate of Abilene High School, Abilene Christian College and Hardin-Simmons University. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific with the VMR 953rd Marine Transport Squadron. After the war, he played football and coached at Abilene Christian, helping guide the Wildcats to their only undefeated season in 1950. He then coached track and field at A.C.C. from 1964-1972, and was an assistant coach on the 1972 U.S. Olympic team. From 1972-1976, he coached at the University of South Carolina and was track and field coach and associate athletic director at LSU from 1976-1986. McClure completed his coaching career at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., in 1996. He was a member of the Abilene Christian Sports Hall of Fame and of the National Track and Field Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
