Bobby Comer

Bobby Wayne Comer, a World War II Naval Veteran and retired U.S.P.S. Mail Carrier, died on the morning of July 4, 2008, at the Veterans Hospital in Big Spring, Texas. He was 81. He was born in Abilene to Pauline and Raymond Comer on July 29, 1927. He attended Abilene High School and McMurry University before joining the Navy on May 25, 1945. He served in the Navy during World War II on the USS Washburn where he was stationed in the Asiatic-Pacific Area. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Virginia Morrell Comer, an infant son, Stephen Comer, his son, Bill Comer, an infant granddaughter, Emily Amanda Comer, and a brother, Bill Comer of Corpus Christi.

On October 11, 1972, he married Helen Laverne Canada Comer of Abilene. LaVerne, who survives him, and he created a blended family of adult children including sons, Mark Comer and his wife Karen of Houston, Bill Comer, and three stepchildren, Sam Webb and wife, Sveta, of Midland, Shirley Anne Webb of Lubbock, Sandi Webb Sitton and husband, Olen Paden, of Lubbock. Bob and LaVerne were blessed with eight grandchildren including, Holly Zuckerman of Tucson, Arizona, Katy and Abby Comer of Houston, Devin Powell of Lubbock, Lisa Webb Reese of Abilene, Dusti Sitton White of Lubbock, Michael Sitton of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Richard Sitton of Houston. Bob-O is also survived by three great granddaughters, Alexis Alvarada, Aubrey Reese, and Madison White.

Bob was a devout Christian who prayed the sweetest prayers. He was a member of Fairmont United Methodist Church in Abilene where he served as a Deacon and the Finance Chairman as well as a member of the choir. He loved to travel, and he and LaVerne recalled their trip with the McMurry Chanters to Paris, France, as one of their most memorable. His hobbies included enjoying vintage movies with LaVerne at the Paramount Theatre in downtown Abilene. He was an avid sports fan who attended Cooper High School and McMurry University football and basketball games. He was a zealous supporter of the University of Texas Longhorns and loved sharing the Horns sporting events with his son, Mark, a UT graduate. He loved sitting and holding his precious dachshund, April May Comer. Bob was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and brother and will be missed by all who loved him.

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, July 12, 2008, in the sanctuary of Southwest Drive United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors at Elmwood Funeral Home on Friday, July 11, 2008, from 5:00-7:00 P.M.
