Bobby Reed, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and proud Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2024. He was 98 years old.
Bobby was born to PT and Bonnie Reed on October 18, 1925, in Pear Valley, Texas, and grew up alongside his six siblings. He met the love of his life, Dorothy Varnadore, and on October 18, 1947, they embarked on a journey of love and commitment that lasted over seven decades. Together, they raised four children and made Abilene and Clyde their cherished lifetime home.
A proud Navy veteran, Bobby served his country with honor during World War II. He was aboard the USS Franklin when it was bombed on March 19, 1945, displaying courage and resilience in the face of adversity. Bobby served under Admiral Nimitz, who had convinced him to join the Navy, and he followed him from ship to ship, earning numerous awards for his bravery, including a Purple Heart, 2 Presidential Citations, 2 Silver Stars, a Pacific War medal, and a medal for going below the 49th parallel.
After his military service, Bobby worked at A&P grocery in Abilene and Freeport until 1957 when he and Dorothy founded Reed's Farm Store. Bobby's entrepreneurial spirit and remarkable salesmanship transformed the store into a thriving business, selling everything from black-eyed peas to 18-wheeler loads of firewood across the United States.
Though proud of his military service, Bobby's greatest pride was his family and his passion for gardening. He lovingly tended to his land, nurturing both plants and family bonds. Whether on a tractor with his grandkids or cruising in his favorite golf cart, Bobby found joy in sharing his love of nature with those he held dear.
Known for his strong will, stubbornness, and witty sense of humor, Bobby's antics were legendary among friends and family. He welcomed everyone with a warm smile at the Farm Store, never failing to shake the hand of a child or make time for anyone in need. His remarkable memory and entertaining stories, often sprinkled with a hint of exaggeration, brought laughter and joy to all who knew him.
A visitation will be 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM, Sunday, February 18, 2024, in the Elmwood Funeral Home's Family Center, 5750 Hwy 277 South. A graveside service will be 1:00 PM, Monday, in Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 Hwy 277 South.

He is survived by son, Bobby Reed Jr. and wife Dayna of Buffalo Gap, Texas; daughter Mindy Patterson and husband Jason of Abilene, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.
Bobby's legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace, knowing that he touched countless lives with his generosity and compassion.
