Carl Cornelius

Carl William Cornelius, 83, died Monday July 5th at Hendrick Medical Center.

Born April 4, 1927 in Vandervoort, Arkansas, Carl began service to his country at age 16 serving in the United States Army under General Patton until honorably discharged November 13, 1945. He then joined the United States Air Force and served until retirement as Master Sergeant at Dyess AFB in 1963. Sarge, as he was called by all who knew him, worked as head of Animal Services for the City of Abilene until his second retirement in 1991.

He is survived by his wife Shirley 6 stepchildren 14 grandchildren 9 great grandchildren 2 great great grandchildren, who lovingly called him Grandsarge several nieces and nephews and one sister Carol in California.

Sarge was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Big Country Scottish Rite Club, Abilene Masonic Lodge 559, serving as the Master in 1972 and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Funeral Service will be 1:00 PM, Friday, July 9th at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South, with burial following at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery with full Military honors. Sarge loved many and was loved by all. He will be missed.
