Carl Opitz

January 3, 1925 — July 19, 2018

Carl Johnell Optiz was born on January 3, 1925 in Haskell County to Erich and Laura Klose Opitz and passed on July 19, 2018 in Dallas, Texas at the age of 93. He graduated from Mattson High School as salutatorian of his senior class in 1942. He enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1943, serving on the USS Chevalier (D.D.805) during World War II, and was honorably discharged in March, 1946. On August 28, 1947 he married Verneda Lehrmann of Sagerton, Texas. Together they had sons Danny Opitz and Jeffrey Optiz.

During his long life, Carl worked for the United States Postal Department. Starting in Weinert, Texas he transferred to Corpus Christi, Texas, ultimately ending in Abilene, Texas, where he retired in 1986 after 40 years of service. During retirement he worked part-time in the McMurry College Postal Department in Abilene. He is a life time member of V.F.W 6873 and a member of The Order of the Sons of Hermann.

Carl was very active in the Dixie Little League baseball program in Abilene during his son's early years. Carl and Verneda were founding members of Grace Lutheran Church in Abilene. They moved to Dallas, Texas in July 2013 and resided at Brookdale Preston. Carl enjoyed the comradery of his friends and Brookdale staff during exercise, music and painting activities.

Carl was predeceased by Verneda, his wife of 65 years and brother, Milbert. Carl is survived by son, Danny and wife Nancy of Irving, son, Jeff and wife Carol Ann of Rockwall, grandchildren, Dana Opitz of Dallas, Marc Opitz of Denver, Bobby Malone of Los Angeles, Kevin Malone of Dallas, Justin Opitz and wife Kassidy of Dallas, and Kimberly Jakus and husband Ted of Dallas, six great- grandchildren, and his sister, Emmie Overton of Lubbock, Texas.

Carl was laid to rest next to his wife in the Garden of Hope at Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene in a private family grave side burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Abilene Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice
