Carmen Barrera

September 10, 1921 — January 15, 2016

Carmen Barrera, 94, of Abilene went to be with the Lord on January 15, 2016.

Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, January 19, at 10:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. A visitation will be held at 6:00 PM on Monday and a prayer service will begin at 7:00 PM at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel.

Carmen was born on September 10, 1921 in Guadalajara, Mexico. She grew up in New Braunfels and later moved to Abilene where she was a longtime resident. There she met and married her husband, Ellis Barrera Sr., and had three children. Carmen worked for the Abilene State School for over 25 years until her retirement. She came out of retirement to work at United Grocery Store for 10 years where she made many friends handing out samples to customers.

Carmen was a devout Catholic and very active in the Holy Family community. She loved to cook Mexican food and always had many catering requests. One of her specialties was her famous tamales which she loved to make at Christmas time. In addition to being a phenomenal cook, Carmen loved to play Bingo and go gambling in Las Vegas with friends and family. She was a member of the Abilene Business Women's Association and the Red Hat Society. She will be missed by many.

Carmen is preceded in death by her husband, Ellis Barrera, Sr., her son, Ellis Barrera Jr., and her grandson, Juan Manuel Barrera.

Carmen is survived by her daughters, Ramona English and Celia Castro, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
