Curtis Johnson

Curtis Lee Johnson, 73, passed away Sunday, October 04, 2009 in Abilene. His funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, October 6, in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South with burial following in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM tonight, Monday, October 5th at Elmwood Funeral Home.

Mr. Johnson was born in Dahoga, Elk County, Pennsylvania on March 1, 1936 the son of Charles G. Johnson and Agnes C. Larson Johnson. He joined the U. S. Navy in 1955, serving 20 years and seeing tours during the Vietnam conflict where he earned 5 Good Conduct Medals, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. He married Barbara A. Sewell in Kingsville, Texas on February 16, 1957 and they have lived in Abilene since 1978. Curtis worked numerous years for Victor Equipment in Abilene.

After his military career, Curtis remained active in service to fellow Veterans. He was a lifetime member of the NCOA, the VFW Post 6873 and the American Legion where he served as Commander in 1986 and 1993 and as 17th District Past Commander from 1997-1999. He enjoyed camping, fishing and bowling and he loved his Texas Lottery scratch offs.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years Barbara Johnson of Abilene; one daughter, Deborah D. Johnson-Serl and husband Junior of Elgin; two sister, Ruth Parker of Chaffee, New York and Goldie Wickwire of Abilene; a sister-in-law, Betty Johnson of Kane, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Brandon, Cameron and Benjamin Serl; two step granddaughters, Sarah Lindberg and Samantha Whited; and numerous nieces and nephews.

His parents, three brothers and 1 sister preceded him in death.
