Durant Kermit (D K) Futrell joined his precious Lela in heaven Friday 3 November 2017. Born in Coleman, Texas, to James W. and Mary Futrell, 27 March 1925. He served the US Army during WWII, wounded December 1944 the Battle of the Bulge, awarded the Purple Heart. He married Lela Ida Bredemeyer 24 November 1945.
He is survived by his son and daughter in law, Gregory D and Normie Futrell, Dallas, Texas; daughter, Barbara Futrell, Seguin, Texas; sister, Dorothy Bridges of Phoenix, Arizona; brother and sister in law, William and Linda Futrell, Midland, Texas; sister in law, Hisako Futrell, Midland, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; a very good friend, P J Collazo to whom we the family owe a huge thank you for his friendship and help, and last but not least the folks at Caps United Methodist Church, their family of friends just down the road.
Preceded in death by brothers, Harold and Don.
He moved the family to Lagunillas, Venezuela, in 1957, continuing his work in the oil patch, where he was known as "Tall Boy", eventually retiring from Raytheon after returning to Abilene in 1962/1963, with productive years at Hendrick Hospital and Timex. His love for horses and a farm like atmosphere and the country directed his and Lela's move from Abilene proper to their long-time home near Caps, Texas in the early seventies.
Visitation for friends and family will be Wednesday, November 8, 2017 from 5:00 till 7:00 PM at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Thursday, November 9, 2017 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow the service in Elmwood Memorial Park with Military Honors.
