Dan Barry Winters, 89, passed away peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by loved ones on April 5, 2021, in Abilene, Texas.
Dan was born November 1, 1931, to Jesse Frank (T-Bone) Winters and Clara Pearl Jackson-Winters in Abilene, Texas. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1950 and went on to joined the Air Force where he proudly served his country for over 3 years and often told stories about his time stationed at Thule Air Base in Greenland. After the military, Dan moved back to Abilene and attended Hardin Simmons University. In his spare time, he could often be found on the golf course or running his pay parking lot downtown while still practicing his golf swing. Over the years, Dan became known for providing free tips and lessons at the driving range to golfers from beginners to professionals. His love of the game and passion for coaching led to him attending the Masters, which was one of his most memorable moments of his lifetime. If you ever dropped by for a visit, you would find him watching golf on TV. One thing was for certain, your conversation would always circle back to golf.
Dan also enjoyed spending time at his ranch in Baird, TX. During his time there, he would visit the local Allsup’s at night where he developed friendships with local law enforcement and many others from the community. He liked to “get a bite to eat” and would often have family or friends join him while always generously paying for everyone’s meal and almost never took no for an answer. During these meals, Dan would tell stories about his life (and pranks) keeping everyone entertained. Everywhere Dan went he was full of life and never met a stranger. He cherished the Abilene community and took great pride in watching it grow. Over the decades, he maintained a collection of photographs of Abilene that can be seen in many documentaries and books written by and for Abilenians. Dan was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Frank (T-Bone) Winters and Clara Pearl Jackson-Winters, his sister and brother in law, Patty Winters Alexander and Sydney M Alexander, II, and brother, Jesse F Winters, Jr.
