David Wright

David M. Wright, 60, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010, at his home in Abilene. Graveside funeral service, with Mike Woodard officiating, will be 1:00 PM Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Visitation for family and friends will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, December 10, 2010 at Elmwood Funeral Home.
David was born on January 23, 1950 in Denison to proud parents Fred E. and Maurice Cowgur Wright. He graduated from Denison High School, received his Bachelor of Science from Southeastern State College and his Masters of Science from East Texas State University. David then began a long successful career in City Administration working in both Palestine and Sherman before he was hired as the City Auditor for the City of Abilene in 1980. By 1982, he had worked his way up to Director of Finance, a position he held until his retirement in May of 2008. David had a passion for Abilene and was proud of his town. As a leader and mentor in his profession and volunteer in the community he was admired by colleagues and friends alike.
David was active in several professional and service clubs. He served as President of the Government Finance Officers Association of Texas in 1993, was a four year member of the Texas Municipal League Board of Directors, and received the Outstanding Management of Accountants award as a member of the Abilene Chapter of the National Association of Accountants. He was a member of the Abilene Rotary Club where he received the Service Above Self award.

On the rare occasions that David was not working or serving in the community, he enjoyed watching football and was an avid Texas Longhorn and Cooper Cougar fan.
David is survived by his four children, Jeremy M. Wright of Abilene, Tish Ferry and husband Mark of Abilene, Tiffani Nyhus and husband Christ of Roby, and Jerod C. Wright of Houston his sister Helen Watson of Savoy and the loving mother to his children, Pat Wright.
His parents preceded him in death.
