Delton was born July 30, 1926 in Hamilton, Texas to T.A. Thomas and Mary Lee Havins. He attended Abilene schools and following in his fathers footsteps, began working for Safeway Stores Inc. in 1945, managing locations in Breckenridge, Big Spring, and Abilene. He went on to become the first manager of the commissary at Dyess Air Force Base in 1955 and spent 30 years working in civil service at the base in Contracting and Procurement. Having received an honorable discharge from the Army in 1943 due to a broken foot resulting from a horse fall, he was very proud to be able to serve his country in this capacity. He married Mary Sue King in 1974 and together, they cherished their friends and family, and above all, adored their grandkids. He was an avid bowler throughout the 60s and 70s, serving on the local board of directors and participating in leagues in every bowling alley in the city as well as many state tournaments through the years.
If you bowled in Abilene during these years or frequented the Dos in the 80s, you knew Delton. He loved talking about all of the road trips taken while following his beloved Abilene High Eagles during their famous 54, 55, and 56 seasons. Well known for being a smooth dancer through the years, he was friendly, kindhearted, relished his family trips to Alaska, and made new friends everywhere he went, even in recent years. Delton was very proud to be a 32nd degree Master Mason. Over the last few weeks, he was noted as a special patient during his stays in different hospitals just because of his goodnature.
We want to acknowledge all of the angels on earth who became part of his life in recent weeks: the nursing staff and doctors at Hendrick Medical Center, Baylor University Heart Center Dallas, Texas Health Huguley Fort Worth, and Community Hospice at Huguley.
