Deverel Harp

January 28, 1934 — December 3, 2021

Abilene - DeVerel L. Harp passed away December 3, 2021 peacefully at hospice with his family by his side.  He was 87. A visitation will be held Friday December 10th at Elmwood funeral home on highway 277 from 6 to 8 pm. A full military service will be Saturday December 11th at 2:00 at Hodges Baptist Church, Hodges Texas with burial at Midway cemetery to follow.

Deverel was born January 28th, 1934 in Hodges Texas to Jennie and L.E. Harp. He lived there all his young life until enlisting in the Air Force at the age of 17.  He served his country for 21 great years traveling to many countries and even fighting in Vietnam. He was stationed in Abilene when he met his wife, Nancy.  They were married 60 years until her death in March of this year.

DeVerel was always up for going to the lake and camping.  He taught all their kids to swim and ski and to have a love of the outdoors and the water. He always loved to travel with their lifelong friends Johnnie and Jerel Woodard. After retiring from the Air Force, they moved back home to Hodges when Daddy and Rick built our home.  In 1975 he started delivering mail for the Abilene post office.  He retired after 20 years. He loved having the mall route and was loved by all who knew him.  You could hear him coming the minute he stepped into the mall greeting everyone.  When he retired from the Post Office, he and Nancy moved to Cross Plains for 13 years where he had a large garden and loved providing vegetables to all who needed and wanting them. When their health started to decline, they bought a house in Abilene to be closer to the family. He loved to help everyone that needed anything done and was always mowing the “older” folk's grass around him.  He was very proud of his country and even bought flags and poles for all his neighbors and was putting up flags in their front yards. 3 years ago, with their health declining they moved in with their daughter and son in law.

DeVerel is survived by 2 sisters, Betty Lou Britton of Hodges Texas and Peggy Bolick of Hickory North Carolina;  Daughter, Debbi Cerny and husband Roger of Del Rio, Texas; son, Rick Harp and his wife Starlet of Gatesville Texas; and daughter, Deann Webb and her husband James of Abilene Texas. Grandchildren, Chrissy, Brandi, Adam, Kelly, Sara and Dakota; and Great Grandchildren, McKenzie, Hayleigh, Cameron, Daxton and Grayson.

Daddy was a wonderful husband, father, Papaw and never met a stranger.  He loved helping his friends and family and was always the first one to step up when someone needed anything. He will be truly missed.  Online condolences can be made at.......

Pallbearer’s will be the U.S. Air Force and Dakota Harp
