Don Wayne Hughes, 72, went to be with the Lord on February 6, 2014 at a local hospital. His funeral service with Pastor Jerry Jordan officiating will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 12th at Faith Deliverance Community Church, 5501 HWY 277 South with interment following in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery. Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday at Elmwood Funeral Home.
Don was born on May 29, 1941 to J.K. and Maedean Hughes. He attended Abilene High School where he played football and was a member of the Team of the Century 19541956. Don served in the United States Marines Corp during the Vietnam War and was very dedicated to serving his country. He married Mary Elizabeth Franklin on November 13, 1998 after more than 30 years of friendship.
His parents, two sons, Timothy Montez and Adam Payton and one grandson, Jadison Crousen preceded him in death.
Survivors include his loving wife of 16 years, Mary F. Hughes five sons, Abel Hughes of Abilene, Michael Don Hughes of Galveston, Timothy Hughes of California, Macieo Franklin of Lewisville and Albert Payton of Littlerock, Arkansas nine daughters, Emily Missie Crousen and husband Kevin of Abilene, Melinda Mindy Steichen of Illinois, Michele SimmonsRobinson, Maurita Jenkins and Shauntee Billups all of Abilene, Roberta Wilmoth and husband Tom currently stationed in Guam, Kelley Sue Tarlton of Memphis, Tennessee, Tammy Hughes of Illinois and Tylynn Farmer of Myrtle Beach 26 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren a brother, Michael Hughes and wife Nancy and their children, Roy Dean and Dusty Hughes as well as a host of other family members , friends and loved ones.
