Doris Jean Giles, 71, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend passed away on Friday, January 21, 2022, in Abilene, Texas. She was known to many as Jean, Grandma Jean and Memaw, but most importantly, she was known as a child of God.
Jean was born in Stamford, Texas, on March 8, 1950, to Richard Davis and Annie Lee Taylor Davis. She began working for Southwestern Bell while in high school and after she graduated from Stamford High School, she continued her career path with Southwestern Bell. Jean was a faithful employee during the company's transition to AT&T and she later retired after over 30 years of employment. She was a dedicated Oscar De Priest Alumni that kept the school reunion active for many years alongside her late sister Lillie Faye Johnson. Jean was the President of the Alumni for 8 years and served in other key roles as well.
Grandma Jean loved being with her family and friends. She would often host Christmas (that was her favorite Holiday) and pajama parties while dancing and listening to her favorite music by the Temptations and Whitney Houston. She was known for cooking big, delicious meals, especially her famous grilled buttered toast for breakfast!
Memaw took pleasure in the simple things in life. She enjoyed watching the Golden Girls, the Young and the Restless, softball and football games, while drinking her sparkling grape juice. She was a dynamic volleyball player and later took on playing softball until the age of 60. Memaw also loved taking trips, especially to the casino.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Davis and Annie Lee Taylor Davis, her siblings, Johnny Richard Davis, Claudia Marsh, Alene Matthews, Jewel Clemmons, Frankie Davis, and Lillie Faye Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her nephews, Richie (Rich) Johnson, Chris Johnson, Arilee "Buzz" Marsh Jr. and Ira Wayne Marsh.
