Dorothy Crain

Dorothy Jean Cook-Crain was born in Abilene, Texas on September 18, 1926, to the late William Cook and Rosie Lee Washington-Cook. Dorothy departed this life on Thursday, January 9, 2020, at Abilene Regional Medical Center surrounded by her family, after fighting the good fight of faith. Funeral Services Saturday, January 18, 2020, at 10:00 AM at Elmwood Funeral Home 5750 Hwy 277 South, Abilene, Texas 79606. Burial to follow at Elmwood Memorial Park.

Dorothy was united in holy matrimony to the late Reverend Willie D. Crain on February 28, 1942. This union was blessed with eight children.

Dorothy dedicated her life to caring for her home, family, her chickens and her beloved rabbit, Ms. Peter. In addition to raising eight children, Dorothy was instrumental in raising thirty grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Dorothy loved cooking, fishing and gardening. Dorothy took great pride in maintaining her lawn. Dorothy had a heart of gold as she never wanted to see anyone go hungry. Dorothy had a unique and special relationship with each of her children and grandchildren. The only person Dorothy loved more than her family was the Lord.

Dorothy was known for her great sense of humor, fashion, quick whit and her “matter of fact” demeanor. Dorothy said what she meant and meant what she said. Dorothy stood steadfast on what she believed in. To have really known her was to love her.

Dorothy united with Shiloh Baptist Church under the leadership of her son in law, Pastor Robert E. Brooks in 2001. Dorothy was appointed one of the five mothers of the church on Mother’s Day 2005. On that day, Dorothy became affectionately known as Mother Crain. Dorothy was a former member of Southside Church of God and Christ, which is now known as Praise Temple, and Independence Baptist Church. Dorothy always reminded her grandchildren to stay with the Lord and the Lord didn’t bring us this far to leave us.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents William Cook and Rosie Lee Washington-Cook; son Billy "Joe Boy" Crain; two brother, Bobby Joe Cook, William Cook Jr; one sister Opal Lee Cook; son in law, James Lowry; two grandchildren, Sharon Crain, Antwain Fields and one great grandchild Porsha Thompson, and Larond “Budda” Crain.

Dorothy leaves behind precious memories and a beautiful legacy to be cherished by her children Dorothy Brooks (Pastor Robert Brooks) of Abilene, TX, Willie Jean Price (late Ellie Price) of Waco, TX, Audrey Clayton (Ollie) of Abilene, TX, Mary Fleming of Abilene, TX, Glodine Fields (Reginald) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Donald Crain of Tacoma, Washington, Jackie Lowry (Charles Jones) of Abilene, TX; one sister, Lois Williams of Abilene, TX; thirty grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and her faithful and devoted friend Ms. Eugenia Burton.
