Dr. Alvie Lee Davis passed into eternity with his savior on March 20, 2014 at age 83. Dr. Davis was born January 22, 1931 to John Caleb Davis and Jewel Hawk Davis in Richardson, Texas. He came to Abilene Christian College in 1950 to major in agriculture, with the intention of returning home to farm. After Dr. Floyd Dunns chemistry classes, he changed his major to Chemistry. He earned a BS in Chemistry from ACC and a Ph. D. in Chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Davis returned to ACC in 1959, where he happily taught and did research in the Chemistry Department for over 50 years. The ACU Biochemistry Research Lab is named for Dr. Davis.
Dr. Davis was known for his kind, gentle demeanor and his willingness to do whatever he could to help students. Even at the end of his life, he always had a smile and encouraging words for his family and friends. He taught thousands of students, demonstrating to them and his family what it meant to be a scientist and a Christian. He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jana Showalter Davis and three children: Jeffrey S. Davis wife Wendy Hall Davis of Cleburne, TX., Dr. Lisa Dudley husband Dr. Eric C. Dudley of Charlotte, NC., and Jay W. Davis of Abilene. Also, his six beloved grandchildren: Rachel Whitman, Terah Whitman, Dylan Davis, Brinna Davis, Ethan Davis, and L. Peyton Davis. Also, his three brothers: John Caleb Davis Jr. of Fate, TX., John Wesley Davis of Edmund, TX., and Oliver Leamon Davis of Richardson, TX. Dr. Davis is also survived by multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family wishes to thank Dr. John Wray and Staff, Dr. Anton Melnyk and Associates, and the Hospice of the Big Country for all of the years of excellent care. Although we will always miss him on this side of eternity, we also give thanks to God through Jesus Christ for the blessed assurance that our Papa is now forever healed.
