Edith Grant

June 14, 1921 — March 18, 2012

Edith Warford Grant, 90, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and aunt passed away peacefully, with family by her side, on Sunday, March 18, 2012, at Coronado Nursing Center. Her funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 21st in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South with interment following in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Edith was born on June 14, 1921, in Garland County, Arkansas, to Walter Monroe Warford and Tennessee Williams Warford. The family moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas, when Edith was 16. She graduated from Fountain Lake High School near Hot Springs.

On February 14, 1943, she met a dashing, young soldier stationed at the Army Navy Hospital in Hot Springs. Two months later, on April 17, 1943, Edith and Harry Grant were married. The marriage lasted 68 years and 11 months. Edith kept the home fires burning while Harry served his country in WWII and the Korean Conflict. They had two daughters, Linda and Judy, to keep her busy.

The family made a permanent move to Abilene, Texas, in 1956. Before her career outside the home, Edith was active in her girls lives with PTA, homeroom mother and Brownie leader. The girls were never without new clothes because of Ediths sewing skills. She made both of her girls wedding dresses, not to mention several bridesmaids dresses for granddaughters weddings.

In 1956, Edith went to work at Abilene Drug on Mockingbird Lane. Most of her time there was spent working in the substation post office. While there, she was never too busy to visit with people, including students from Abilene High School. While working there for 19 years, she even met a future soninlaw and a grandsoninlaw. She always had a place in her heart for everyone.

In 1980, she went to work in AISD Food Service at Franklin Middle School. She was the dessert lady. Again, she met no stranger. Fellow workers, teachers, coaches, principals and students, alike, were surrounded by her caring spirit. She retired after 12 years to enjoy welldeserved time off to spend in her garden.

Edith was active in the life of Brook Hollow Christian Church. She supported Harry in all of his church and civic activities. Edith and Harry were members of the Good Sams Club. They enjoyed their camping travels with family and friends. Their travels took them to more than half of the contiguous United States.

Edith loved her family and supported them all in whatever they were doing. That support came in many forms opening their home to Lindas and Judys friends, a full cookie jar, newlymade dresses, watching twirling, and baseball, basketball and football games, and gasoline money for grandkids.

Edith was preceded in death, five days ago, by her husband. She never heard those words, but she somehow knew her job here was done. Others preceding her in death are her parents, two brothers, Earl Warford and his wife Opal and Alvin Warford and greatgreat grandson, Bradley James RoystonWright. Survivors include daughters Linda Leddy and husband David of Mansfield and Judy Elliott and husband Ricky of Lewisville grandchildren Lisa and Donald McBride of Tuscola, Tami and James Wright of Watauga, Grant and Kristy Leddy of Crowley, Kristy and Tim Carter of Houma, LA, and Wendy and Buddy Kincaid of Flower Mound greatgrandchildren A.J. and Samantha Wright, Kailey, Ashley and Makinley Carter, Leddy McBride, Seth Leddy, Hunter Stamper and Andrew and Emily Kincaid sisterinlaw Bonnie Warford of Mansfield niece Lana and Glynn Mathis of Ft. Worth, nephew Mike and Nelda Warford of Schertz and several great nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimers Association or the American Diabetes Association.

A very special thank you to the family of caregivers at Coronado Nursing Center for all of the love, care and support they gave to Harry and Edith Grant.
