Eglecerio Masing Verzosa, 87, passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 in Abilene. Viewing will be from 6:00 to 7:00 PM with Rosary beginning at 7:00 PM on Friday, January 30th at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South. His funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel with entombment following in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mr. Verzosa was born on December 31, 1921, in Buri Burawin Leyte, Philippines. He served as US forces during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines and as a Philippine Civilian Guerilla under the direction of General McArthur was responsible for the repatriation of the island of Leyte in the Philippines. Pvt Verzosa was then assigned to K co. 3rd battalion 95th inf. 92nd
. sent to Corregidor as the lead team for the assault. Their actions successfully removed the Japanese occupiers. He then removed the Japanese flag from the island and raised the Philippine and American flags returning the captured flag to Major Balderian who presented it to General Bonifacio. He was a devoted husband of 67 years to the former Pelagia Barrantes who preceded him in death on July 19, 2008.
Survivors include his children, Maria Salvacion of Norway, Christiana Pleimann and husband Tim of Abilene, Elizabeth Hoch and husband Larry of Hammond, Indiana, Osias Verzosa and wife Remy and Pasquel Verzosa and wife Mila all of the Philippines, and Erene Frazier and husband Michael of Kadena AB, Japan; 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
