Eleanor Gilbert

Eleanor Clara Gilbert, 89, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012 in Abilene. Her funeral service with Dr. Herbert Wood officiating will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 23, 2012 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 HWY 277 South.

Eleanor was born on April 24, 1922 in Newark, New York the daughter of Leonard Van Boven and Clara Burns. She graduated from the Genesee Hospital School of Nursing as a Register Nurse in 1943 and married Alvin Gilbert on August 30th that same year. She taught nursing for 10 years at the University of Texas before becoming the Director of Nurses at Galveston County Health Unit. She retired in 1975. Eleanor and Alvin came to Abilene in 1985 to be near their children. She was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Alvin Gilbert of Abilene her children, Penny Pope and husband Howard of Abilene and Brad Gilbert and wife Carolyn of Stephenville 3 grandchildren, Jeff Pope, Randy Pope and Carol Dawn Gilbert and 5 great grandchildren.

Her parents and her sister, Genieve Lewis preceded her in death.
