Elgin Baldwin Sr. passed to the arms of God Friday February 16th, 2024 at the age of 97 years. Funeral Services will be Wednesday February 28, 2024 at 11:00 am at Crescent Heights Baptist Church 1902 N Mockingbird Ln, Abilene, Texas. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 27, 2024 from 5:00pm-7:00pm, Burial at Elmwood Memorial Park, Abilene, Texas.
He was born to William and Laura Gilmore Baldwin in Chilton, Texas on March 27th 1926. Elgin Baldwin Sr. worked as a foreman at the Hamlin Pied Piper Feed Mill for many years. He also exercised his entrepreneurial skills by building, and operating a fully functioning Washateria in Hamlin Texas. Elgin's desire to advance his career led him to work for the City of Abilene until retirement.
Elgin was a man of humble beginnings. Respected and loved by many. Mr.Baldwin was an active church member of Holiday Hills Baptist Church Abilene,Texas. Elgin developed a remarkable impact in the Abilene community; he also had a great love for farming and
agriculture. He often quoted "Don't worry about the mule going blind just sit tight and hold the line." Mr. Baldwin was also the recipient of the Morgan Hickman Business Award from the Abilene Black History Committee in 2004.
Beyond his personal accomplishments Elgin loved his family unconditionally. Especially his wife of 75 years Mrs. Elberta P. Baldwin until her passing. Left to cherish his memories are his children Linda Gailes (Rev.Frank Gailes) of Abilene,Texas Elgin Baldwin Jr (Monica) of Denton, Texas, Virginia McPherson (U.L. McPherson), Darnell Baldwin of Abilene,Texas. Sister in law Mary Francis Daughtery (J.L.Daugherty) of Abilene, Texas. His beloved brother Brady Baldwin of Lubbock, Texas. A host of 20 grandchildren,14 great-grandchildren,and several nephews,nieces. Adopted son Mack McCauley of Oklahoma.
Preceded in death by William and Laura Gilmore Baldwin. Beloved wife Mrs. Elberta P. Baldwin, and daughter Kathy Yvonne Baldwin. Sister's Oliva Harris, Dorothy Nash, Alberta Cork.Brother(s) William Baldwin I, Speedy Baldwin, Wilson Baldwin of Lubbock, Texas. Grandson(s) Timothy T. Baldwin, Cedric L. Cavanaugh of Abilene, Texas. Jasmine Carter of Dallas, Texas
