Floyd Grimm

Sunday afternoon, February 21, 2021, 84-year-old Floyd Rich Grimm, slipped from the shackles of his earthly body to be with his heavenly Lord. He was a beloved police officer, a navy veteran, a father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, mentor, teacher, deacon, and so much more.
Floyd was born December 25, 1936, a Christmas baby to Margaret Elizabeth and Richard Hugo Grimm in Bell County, Texas. The family worked as farmers and sharecroppers in the German Hill country area, moving to Ballinger in the '50s, and eventually settling in Clyde, Texas.
Floyd married Dorothy Faye Allison on June 28, 1958. They settled in Abilene, raising three children: Ken, Sheri, and Gary.
He worked as a line supervisor at the Timex Watch factory before joining the Abilene Police Force, serving as a patrol officer for 31 years. His long-time partner, Frank Weise, was an important part of his life on and off duty.
On Thanksgiving Eve, November 1978, officers Floyd Grimm and Boyd Scott responded to a call at a Skinny's convenience store. An armed robbery was in progress. When Floyd entered the store, gunfire erupted. Even though struck by one of the robber's bullets, he continued to engage the active shooter, striking the robber twice. He fully recovered from his wound acquired in the line of duty serving the citizens of Abilene. The robber was convicted of attempted capital murder.
He also served in the United States Naval Reserve, where he rose to the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer E8. Floyd loved regaling the family with tales of his times at sea in service to our country.
He served as a deacon of Belmont Baptist Church for many years. One of his favorite duties was to present the children's sermon during services. He taught Sunday School classes, served on many committees, and made sure widows received a gift near Valentine's Day.
He also served as Scoutmaster of Troop 6, watching both sons attain the coveted Eagle rank. He was honored with the Silver Beaver award for his work with Boy Scouts (considered the highest award a Boy Scout Council can bestow upon a volunteer Scouter), along with multiple other accolades. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He made sure each Sunday morning campout contained a devotional honoring the scouting law "A Scout is Reverent." His camp out Dutch-oven cobblers were legend.
Floyd is best known for his willingness to serve others. For his family, he was the go-to guy. His vast knowledge, network of friends, and hands-on skills were a blessing to those lucky enough to know him.
Self-taught in many areas, he was also a voracious reader of western novels. He had an extraordinary quality of humble wisdom and understood human character deeply. His deep sense of empathy and passion for helping affected all the people in his life. How he lived life became a template for his children and others to follow.
Floyd, we will miss you, greatly. Thank you for your willingness to step up and be the man God needed you to be. For those of us fortunate to be a part of your life, it was an honor to share time on this earth with you. We are better people because you walked this earth with God.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Rich and Margaret Grimm, and son-in-law Thomas (Tom) Walton.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; sons Kenneth Grimm of San Angelo; Gary Grimm and wife Angela of Brock; daughter Sheri Walton of Clyde; and was a beloved "Grandie" to grandchildren - Allison and Jesse Hendricks, Trey and Courtney Walton, Andrew and Rebecca Walton, Emily and Romeo Garza, Alexandra Grimm; and great-grandchildren Bailey, Peyton, Bowen, Kendal, Benaiah, Zadkiel, Ezekiel, and Miriam.
Viewing will be at Belmont Baptist Church, 2117 Palm Street, at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 2, immediately followed by an 11:00 a.m. service. Graveside services will be at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 7457 West Lake Road at 1:00 p.m. A late lunch will be served at Belmont at 2:00 p.m. Flowers and cards may be sent to Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South, Abilene, Texas 79606. Memorial love offerings may be made to Belmont Baptist Church or the Abilene Police Officer's Association.
Honor Guard service will be provided by the Abilene Police Honor Guard.
