Frances Burditt

November 28, 1926 — October 16, 2016

Frances Horne Burditt left this world on October 16, 2016 in Abilene, Texas at the age of 89.

The daughter of William D. Horne and Pari Lee Horne, Frances was born in Rison, Arkansas on November 28, 1926. She met the love of her life and husband, Dr. Tom C. Burditt, in 1944 while she was a nurse at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston, Texas. Tom was attending Baylor Medical School, also in Houston. Frances would thereafter comment that she, coming from Arkansas, was impressed by the cowboy boots he wore throughout the hospital wards. They were married May 30, 1947 at the First Methodist Church, South Main, in Houston.

Frances moved at a young age from Rison to nearby Warren, Arkansas where she graduated from Warren High School in 1944. Following nursing assignments at Jefferson Davis Hospital, Tom's graduation from medical school, and marriage, they relocated back to Tom's home town in Abilene where he joined the medical practice of his father Dr. Jesse N. Burditt, Sr.

Frances belonged to St. Paul United Methodist Church for over sixty years; was a member of the Propheteers Sunday school class and served on many boards and committees of the Church. She was a regular greeter for Sunday worship services, a member of the Abilene Women's Club, Junior League of Abilene, and Taylor County Medical Auxiliary. She belonged to two bridge clubs and greatly enjoyed hosting and entertaining others in her home. She and Tom enjoyed dancing, whether as members of Abilene CC or while listening to records and twirling around the living room.

Frances and Tom were avid supporters of the Fighting Texas Aggies and attended many games together where she watched from the stands while covering her eyes because the excitement was so great. She loved to garden, enjoyed watching the birds and created her own outdoor spaces at each of the homes in which they lived in Abilene for more than sixty years. She treasured her family, friends, and neighbors; and loved her two children deeply.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents; husband Dr. Tom C. Burditt; son Tom C. Burditt, Jr.; sisters Myrtice Day, Hazel Melton, Juanita Hardy; and brother, Jim Dorsey Horne. She is survived by her daughter, Leigh Burditt Daniels and husband Tim Daniels; daughter-in-law Nancy Elliott Burditt; and many nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to West Texas Rehabilitation Center, which along with the Annual Telethon both she and Tom passionately supported for over forty years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 22 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Family members will receive visitors preceding the services from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m.
