Freddie was born in Hamlin, Texas on September 13, 1937 to the late Herschel W. and Zella Mae Fancher Ewing. Freddie attended Abilene schools. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1956 and HardinSimmons University, where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Freddie completed his class work toward a Master of Business Administration degree at Texas Tech. He was in the United States Navy for four years. He washed out of the FROG program in the Navy after breaking two ear drums in training. He was, however, assigned to the staff of the Commander of the Western Pacific Fleet where he served in the intelligence field for the remainder of his service.
While at Hardin Simmons, in Chapel, he met his trophy wife, Phyllis. They were married on June 21, 1960 in the chapel of First Baptist Church in Abilene. This is the same chapel were his Sunday school now meets, and where his memorial service is to be held. Freddie and Phyllis moved back home to Abilene after being away for forty three years. Freddie retired from Texaco Refining and Marketing after thirty years of service. During his business career he was awarded the Texaco Presidents Award and numerous accolades in the Refining and Marketing field.
Freddie led a good life. He loved sports. He has been to a Super Bowl, been to the Rose, Cotton, Alamo, and Sun Bowls, Cowboy Stadium, Candlestick Park, the Coliseum, the Ballpark in Arlington, Kesar Stadium, Helsinki, Finland, and the ballparks in San Diego, Palo Alto , and Berkley California. His favorite places to watch games, however, were wherever the Abilene Eagles, Texas Tech Red Raiders and HardinSimmons Cowboys played. Freddie fought his battle with NonHodgkins Lymphoma for nine years. He faced this disease with courage and dignity and knew his destination was with God.
Freddie is survived by his wife, Phyllis sisters, Daurice and husband Johnny Steele, Mary and husband Jim Arnold children, Shannon and wife Diane Ewing, Paige and husband Rob Wolfe grandchildren, Logan Ewing, Aubry Ewing, and Travis Ewing his dog, DD.
