Garla Eyrle Mitchell Hernandez, 81 of Abilene went to her Heavenly Home Monday, March 4, 2024. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 7th from 6-8 pm at Elmwood Funeral Home 5750 Hwy 277 South. The service is scheduled on March 8th at 3 pm in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, with Brother Larry Hooper officiating.
Garla was born August 18, 1942, in Stamford, TX to Garland and Connie Mitchell. She attended Stamford schools. Garla started her lifelong career as a caregiver, first as a CNA in the hospital and nursing homes and then as a live in caretaker. She loved what she did. She had such compassion and patience for ladies she took care of.
She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Clyde. Garla had a love for the Lord like no other. It is from him that she received the gift of giving. She gave freely of her love to all she knew. She always made sure the grandkids had something for a birthday or Christmas, even if it was just a card.
Garla could be found working on a word search puzzle or playing bingo with her friends at University Place. She loved going to Dillard's and shopping for shoes. But, by far her greatest passion (besides Jesus) was her love of the Texas Rangers. She never missed a game on tv. She would give a play-by-play commentary and could even be heard pointing out a bad play or call by an umpire.
Garla is survived by her daughter, Tamara Hobbs and husband Mike of Potosi; sons, Rusty Wayne Young and wife Betty of College Station, Kenneth Ray Young and wife Kim of Anson; her cousin, Georgann Herpeche and husband Abie of Clyde;sister-in-law, Tina; her grandchildren; great grandchildren; and great-great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Hendrick Hospice Care.
