George Washington Chatfield, 83, passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at his home in Abilene. Viewing and visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Friday, November 13 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 HWY 277 South. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, November 14th in the Garden of Good Shepherd at Elmwood Memorial Park
Mr. Chatfield was born on February 22, 1926 in Leicester, Vermont the son of Asa B. Chatfield Sr. and Marion Arvilla Herrington Chatfield. He married Phyllis Lockhart on April 5, 1958 in Oklahoma and she preceded him in death on May 11th of this year. He served in the United States Air Force during WW II and remained in service to our country for 22 years retiring in 1968. George had several careers after his retirement from the Air Force; he worked 24 years for the City of Abilene at the Grimes Water Treatment Plant, and over 10 years for HR Block during tax season, he also did tax preparation out of his home for several years. George was a self taught wood craftsman and electrician.
Survivors include his son, Bob Chatfield of Abilene; his daughter, Joyce Smith and husband Billy of Abilene; two sons from his first marriage, George Asa and Jim Chatfield of California; one sister, Regina Thomas of Easten, Maine; one brother, Russell Chatfield of Johnson, Vermont; brother-in-law, Art Claycomb of Clayton, New Mexico; 7 grandchildren, including, Randy Valdez, Jason Chatfield and Jaclynn Summers, 4 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial donations are suggested to The Food Bank of Abilene, 5505 N 1st St, Abilene, TX 79603; the American Cancer Society, or donors favorite charity.
