George Arthur Maxwell, "The Singing Sheriff", went peacefully to be with the Lord on April 28, 2016. George Maxwell was born in Buffalo Gap, Texas to Ima Pearl and George Thomas Maxwell on September 15, 1928.
At the age of 18 he was offered a contract by the Blue Sox to play professional baseball, but he started his law enforcement career at the age of 24 instead. He served Taylor County for 40 years as a police officer, DA investigator, sheriff, and juvenile probation officer. He was particularly proud of his career accomplishments by starting the first DA investigator program and creating block-safe homes for children.
He married the love of his life Lola Stockton on December 24, 1948. George was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan, and in his earlier years enjoyed singing country music with his band known as the "Abilene Roadrunners."
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mardel Harmes. He is survived by his wife, Lola Maxwell; his two sons, Dickie Maxwell and wife Jackie Maxwell, Mike Maxwell and wife Carolyn Maxwell; his two daughters Cathy Reed and Jeannean Pettit; four grandchildren; Eric Maxwell, Michelle Maxwell, Callie Reed, and Courtney Reed; his brother Donnie Maxwell; his sister Annette Mills, and many more close family and friends.
The family visitation will be Sunday, May 1st, at Elmwood Funeral Home from 3:00-5:00pm. Funeral services will be at 2:00pm, Monday, May 2nd, at the First Church of the Nazarene, 2849 Beltway S. Burial will follow at the Buffalo Gap Cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the Taylor County Sheriff's Department or Interim Healthcare Hospice.
