TSGT RETIRED GERALD JERRY GARRETT

Gerald Garrett, 79, died Friday, August 2, 2013, at his home from a short illness. Visitation will be August 5, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Elmwood Funeral home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral service will be August 6, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. in the Elmwood Funeral home Chapel officiated by Reverend Rick Doyle and Reverend Ryan Strebeck. Interment will follow the service at Elmwood Memorial Park.

Gerald was born on April 14, 1934, in Wilmington, Delaware. He married Margie Chamberlain on July 3, 1953, in San Angelo, Texas. Gerald enjoyed going to Abilene High football games, watching the Dallas Cowboys, golfing, hunting, and fishing.

Gerald served in the Air Force from 1952 to 1973, at the time of his retirement his duties were at the Dyess AFB fire department. In 1973 Gerald served in Civil Service which he returned to the Dyess AFB fire department until his retirement 1993 as Asst. Fire Chief. After his retirements, he volunteered a considerable amount of his free time working with the local Veterans office which included working on the Veterans parade, organizing placement of flags at the cemeteries in the Abilene area, Veterans Thanksgiving dinners, and an Interim Veterans Service Officer. Gerald served several positions on the board for Communities of Abilene Federal Credit Union from 1972 to 2012, at the time of his retirement he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors. At the time of his death he was a Trustee Chair at Elmwood West Methodist Church.

Gerald was preceded in death by his mother, Anna Elizabeth Garrett mother and father inlaw, Hershel and Kathern Chamberlain sister inlaw and brother inlaw, John and Edith Jones nephew, Roger Judkins great nephew, Matthew Sivells.

Gerald is survived by his loving wife, Margie son, Gary Wayne Garrett and wife, Debbie daughter, Gayle Lemmons and husband, Donny his sister, Virginia Sandberg and husband Ray, of Sicklerville, NJ nephews, Ray Sandberg and wife Pat and Mark Sandberg of NJ niece, Ginny Sandberg NJ grandsons Zack Garrett and fianc Jennifer, Jason Sears and D.J. Lemmons granddaughters, Meagan Beltran and husband Manuel and Tania Crabtree and husband Timothy step granddaughters, Tricia Wordell and Shawna Lewis eleven great grandchildren and numerous close loved family members.
