Gerard "Mac" McCann, 80, passed away Monday, November 16, 2015 in Abilene. A Rosary service will be held at 7:00 PM, Friday, November 20, 2015 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 5410 Buffalo Gap Road. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Holy Family Catholic Church. The inurnment will follow the service at Elmwood Memorial Park.
Gerard was born May 29, 1935 in Belfast, Ireland to parents, John and Gertrude McCann. He attended school in Ireland and while in his late teens left home to begin working on a cruise ship. Later, he moved to America and joined the United States Air Force. He married his childhood sweetheart Rachel "Patsy" Mckeever in 1960 and they enjoyed fifty-one years of marriage before her passing in 2011. During that time he was stationed in multiple states, Germany, Turkey, Vietnam and finally Abilene, where he retired after more than twenty years of dedicated service. He then began a 2nd career as a truck driver where he drove for several companies around Abilene including the United States Postal Service.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Holy Family's Men's Spirituality Group, and the VFW. He enjoyed traveling and seeing the world, was a very devoted husband and father, and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Survivors include his five children, Moya Wolf and husband Calvin of Frisco, TX, Damian McCann and wife Angei of Houston, TX, Eileen Williams and husband David of Tuscola, TX, Clare Carroll and husband Donald of Houston, TX, and Owen McCann of Temple, TX; ten grandchildren, Ryan Wolf, Daniel Wolf, Thomas McCann, Andrew McCann, Alex McCann, Jessica Williams, Dalton Williams, Sean Carroll, Rachel Carroll, and Aoife McCann; two sisters, Moya Fergus of Belfast, Ireland and Theresa Creighton of London, England; and Several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel P McCann; grandson, Gerard John McCann; two brothers, Jackie and Joe McCann; and his parents.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Holy Family Catholic Church, Joey and Karen Light, and Dennis and Janelle O'Connell.
In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorials in Gerard's honor to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
