Gertrude Mansell Filipovich, 91, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 28, 2012 after a brief illness. She was born in Commerce, Texas on July 18, 1920 and moved to Abilene with her parents, Bill and Velma Mansell, when she was five years old.
Gertrude graduated from Abilene High School in 1937 and Draughons Business College in Abilene. She was a secretary at Camp Barkley during WWII where she met Mark Filipovich who she married on May 21, 1943. Gertrude worked for a time at Grissoms in River Oakes and at Montgomery Ward.
She was a faithful member at North Fifth and Grape Street Church of Christ and volunteered at the Christian Service Center as an interviewer from 1973 until the time of her death.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and son David Mark Filipovich. She is survived by her daughters, Mary Hanson of Abilene and Cathy Rawlins and soninlaw, Will of View. Other survivors include her brother and wife, Joe and Willetta Mansell of Kingwood, Texas and her sister, Merle Gill of Lubbock. She is also survived by granddaughters Mary Jane Hanson of Abilene and Catherine Davis and husband Richard of Bedford, Texas.
Visitation will be 5 till 7 PM, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral service will be 3 PM, Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at North 5th and Grape Church of Christ, 433 Grape Street. Interment will follow the service in Elmwood Memorial Park.
