Gladys Hume

There was a celebration in Heaven when Gladys Hume walked through the Pearly Gates on Tuesday morning, February 2, 2010, to be welcomed by the many loved ones who had gone before her. For more than 94 years, Gladys Mozelle Gooch Hume faithfully served her Lord here on Earth, by dedicating herself to her many roles as daughter, sister, wife, aunt, friend, artist, writer and teacher.

Gladys accomplished a great deal during her time with us. She was a lifetime member of the Abilene Writers Guild. Many of her articles and short stories were published in various national and regional magazines. Among her published books: Brands of the Southwest with Juanita Zachary, a childrens book titled The Cloud Circus, and Wildflowers and Folklore. Gladys was also an artist, studying art in Dallas and Los Angeles, and teaching in an elementary school. In Abilene, Gladys worked 26 years as Historian at the West Texas Rehabilitation Center and was the artist for the Brands Wall at WTRC.

Gladys Hume was born May 30, 1915, in Pioneer, Eastland County, Texas. She attended Rock Hill School near Hamby, where her family farmed. She graduated from Abilene High School and received a B.A. degree from HardinSimmons University in 1938. While teaching in Los Angeles, she met and married William Bill Hume. They later moved to Abilene where Mr. Hume was an accountant until his death in 1963. Gladys and Bill were a force behind the establishment of civil and political rights of the physically disabled in West Texas. They founded the Abilene Chapter of the Indoor Sports Club and were active members for many years.

Gladys was proud of her Texas pioneer heritage and was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was a direct descendant of Isaac Jackson, one of the original Old Three Hundred colonists who came with Stephen F. Austin to settle in the wilderness of Texas in 1824.

Mrs. Hume is survived by a niece, Desda Diane Dotson of Abilene, a nephew, Kyle Dotson and wife Jill Stallings of San Jose, California four greatnephews and nieces Christy Carlson and husband Colin Warriner of Seattle, Washington Andrew Carlson of Abilene Stephen Dotson and wife Katie of Tyler, Texas and Stephanie Dotson of Paris, Texas. Gladys Hume was preceded in death by her husband, William Bill Hume her parents, Dan Callaway Gooch and Lily Mae Densman Gooch her sister, Joy Gooch Dotson and a nephew, Craig Dotson of Denison.

Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Thursday, February 4, 2010, at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy. 277 South in Abilene. Funeral services will be at Elmwood Funeral Chapel at 10:30 am on Friday, February 5, 2010. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park.

Gladys Hume was well cared for at Sears Mesa Springs for almost two years before her passing.
