Glenn Franklin Taylor, Jr
Glenn won the final race and crossed the finish line into the welcoming arms of his Lord on Monday, August 24, 2009 at his home in Abilene, Texas. He fought a valiant battle with cancer for over three years.
Glenn was born in Neosho, Missouri on March 17, 1942 to Glenn F Taylor, Sr. and Lucile Taylor. When he was five years old his mother married Gerald F Simmons and he always considered himself lucky to have two dads. He loved going to his grandparents farm when he was young and had great stories to tell about all the fun with Pa and Grandma. He graduated from high school in Springfield, Missouri in 1960, and a few days later enlisted in the US Navy where he served for nine years. After tiring of being on the big boats, he left the Navy and went back home. Six months later he joined the Air Force and after training spent a year in Vietnam. When he returned to the United States he was stationed at a place called Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene and he completed his 20 year military career at Dyess. Following his USAF retirement he worked for Hughes Diesel and Abilene Transit, and then spent eight years with the US Postal Service at the Mail Processing Center before retiring due to health issues.
Glenn married Janet Stovall on April 11, 1986 and they shared 23 wonderful years together. He was a faithful member of Broadview Baptist Church and was proud to be a Mason with Hobah Lodge in Abilene. His true passions in life were his family and being a devoted fan of NASCAR even getting to drive a race car at Texas Motor Speedway a thrill of a lifetime.
Glenn is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, a stepsister, and numerous aunts and uncles. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Janet, of Abilene, a daughter, Lori Cagle of Holts Summit, Mo and her children, Jared US Army in Kentucky and his family, and Toni and her son Taylor Chance of Holts Summit. Also surviving him are his daughter-in-love Kelly Stovall Raney and husband Bill of Clarksville, Md. and their daughters Diana Dodson-Raney of Philadelphia, Pa Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Chelsea Raney a sophomore at Penn State. He is also survived by his brother, Jack Simmons, of Houston, TX and several aunts, uncles and cousins special cousin Joyce Farr of Harrisonville, Mo. He was a good man who truly loved his family and as the grandchildren can attest Simply the Best PaPa in the World.
Services will be held on Friday, August 28, 2009 at Broadview Baptist Church, 2500 South 27th in Abilene with Pastors David Cason and Wes Terry officiating. Family visitation will be Thursday evening from 5-7 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Highway 277 South in Abilene. Burial with full military honors will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park.
