L. Haskell Sinclair, 79, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2014 in Abilene. The memorial celebration with Dr. David Wray and Jim Reynolds officiating will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, January 13th in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Highway 277 South with interment following in Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service.
Haskell was born on January 17, 1934 in Ravenna, Texas. He graduated from Sherman High School in 1951 and attended Abilene Christian College on a football scholarship. He graduated as an undergraduate in 1955 and received a Masters in Education a few years later. Haskell married Yvonne Ragle on November 26, 1954. He coached football and basketball for four years in Olney, Texas, then coached basketball and taught history at Abilene Christian High School from 1959 to 1961. Haskell then coached JV basketball and was head baseball coach at ACC and provided drivers education classes to college students. From 1962 1963, Haskell coached basketball and was head baseball coach at Oklahoma Christian. Haskell and Yvonne returned to Abilene in 1964, and he taught and coached in the AISD. He became assistant principal at Franklin Middle School in 1980, took early retirement after a few years, and was a principal for two years in New Mexico. He and Yvonne raised two sons, Jerry and Jimmy, in Abilene.
Boppa and Granny loved antiquing together, filling their house with interesting pieces. They enjoyed movies and quiet evenings spent at home. Boppa also loved spending time with his two grandchildren, taking them fishing, teaching them to play basketball, and spending many game nights together with them. Granny and Boppa lived in Ruidoso, New Mexico, for a while after retirement.
Yvonne and Haskell are charter members of University Church of Christ in Abilene. He had a strong faith and was a gentle, kind man.
Haskell was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Lucille Sinclair, and his brother, L.D. Sinclair.
Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Sinclair of Abilene his sons, Jerry Sinclair and wife Liz of Abilene and Jimmy Sinclair of Dallas his sister, Jean Inman and husband Wayne of Sherman his grandchildren, Katherine Kinnaman and husband Andrew of Abilene and Elizabeth Libby Sinclair of Abilene and his nieces, Lynn Jundt, husband Dom, and three children of Lewisville, NC, and Kathy Peden, husband Brad, and one son of Denison, TX.
