Hazel Young

A memorial service for Hazel Ann Derden Young, 61, of Tye, TX will be held on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Highway 277 South, Abilene, TX.

Hazel was born on Thursday, January 8, 1953 at Webb AFB, Big Spring, TX. Her family moved several times during her early years because her father was in the U.S. Air Force. The family settled in Abilene in October of 1964. Hazel attended Lee Elementary, Mann Jr. High, and Abilene High graduating May 31, 1971. During High School she worked part time starting with the opening of the first McDonalds in Abilene located on N. 1st. Hazel was divorced and married 3 times and from those unions she was blessed with 3 children. Hazel and her brother Spruce Jr. were members of a group called the Singing Teens from Trinity Baptist Church. She worked for Jim Polk, Polk Petroleum, for over 30 years as his housekeeper. Hazel also did house cleaning for various individuals during these years, until her health forced into retirement.

Hazel died Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Hendrick Medical Center after a lengthy illness. Hazel is survived by her parents Spruce and Dorthy Derden of Abilene 3 children, daughter Ariel Young of Tye, son Douglas Bonz Jones,his 2 children grandchildren daughter Zoee and son Zaccary of Abilene daughter Lindsey Roland and her 2 daughters grandchildren Raeanna and Sayde of Tye 2 brothers, Spruce Derden Jr. and wife LaVeda of Natchez, MS, David Derden and wife Kandy of Sedalia, MO sister Wanda Cano and husband Rudy and their daughter niece Cori, of New Braunfels, TX nephew Spruce Derden III of Clinton, MS niece, Leighann LeMaster and husband Jacob of Little Rock, AR numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Hazel is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Clifton and Egelee Patterson and her paternal grandparents Riley and Alice Derden, close aunts and uncles.

Hazel was a beautiful, loving, caring daughter, sister, wife, grandmother, and friend and will be greatly missed by all who loved her here on earth but heaven now has a beautiful, wonderful addition.
