Hedy Helen Anastopulos Fackelman, 91, died July 28, 2017 in Abilene at local medical facility. There will be a private family Entombment. The visitation will be Sunday, July 30, 2017 from 2 pm to 4pm at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South.
She was born at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, March 16, 1926 to Peter H. Anastopulos and Ella Grace Cassel Anastopulos. She was raised by her stepfather, Harvey L. Smith. She graduated from Brownwood High School and attended Howard Payne University. She worked during WWII at Camp Bowie in Brownwood, Texas.
After the war Hedy married Martin J. Fackelman. They had two daughters, Gail (David) Jackson Smith, of De Kalb, Tx. And Laura Fackelman, of Abilene, Tx; three grandsons, Nic (Nikki) Jackson, of Dallas, Case (Mystal) Jackson, of Boerne, Tx, and Gavin ( Angie ) Jackson, of Fredericksburg, Tx; seven great grandchildren, Ashley, Hannah, Garrison, Kamry, Hailee, Deagan, and Analyn Jackson.
When Hedy lived in Denver, Colorado, she was on the nominating board for Miss America as she had been a contestant herself and also a Judge. She was "Woman of the Year" in her sorority. She won 7th place in the world competition with her shorthand. She also taught at Commercial College of Abilene and was a dedicated Baptist.
She was the branch manager of Kelly Services for 27 years in Abilene and retired when she was 80. She was very active in the Abilene Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Redcoats for over 27 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, her father, her mother, step father, three brothers, and one sister.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations to be made to Shiner's Children Hospital or their favorite charity.
