Helen Comer

July 22, 1925 — August 13, 2010

Memorial services will be held for Helen LaVerne Canada Comer at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, August 16, 2010, at Southwest Drive United Methodist Church in Abilene. She died on August 13, 2010, in Lubbock, Texas. She had been under the care of Hospice of Lubbock since April.
LaVerne was born on July 22, 1925, to Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Jackson Canada. She was born in the Canada family home, located in Howard County, near Big Spring, Texas. She was raised in Callahan County and graduated from Clyde High School where she was on the tennis team.
On February 6, 1943 she married Samuel E. Webb with whom she had three children. She, and her children, moved to Abilene in 1954 where she continued to live until 2006. She was employed by The Fabric Mart as a salesclerk, Horace Holly Motors as a secretary, Employers Insurance of Texas as a supervisor, and as an executive secretary for Dr. David Blackburn, a former director of the McMurry College Chanters.
LaVerne, throughout her 53 years in Abilene, was very involved in the community as well as in her beloved church, Fairmont United Methodist. As a member of Fairmont, she served as the Chairman of the Childrens Division, a member of the choir, an officer on the finance committee, and taught an adult Sunday School Class. She loved her church family and enjoyed participating in Talent Nights at the church.
LaVerne married Bobby Wayne Comer on October 11, 1972. They were avid sports fans and attended both Abilene High and Cooper High football games as well as McMurry University football and basketball games. They travelled extensively throughout the United States and Europe. They also enjoyed attending the classic movies at the Paramount Theatre as well as playing domino games and bridge. LaVerne was an officer in the Abilene Garden Club and enjoyed gardening at home. She began taking painting classes, whenever she turned fifty, and became an accomplished artist who utilized oil paints as her medium. Her paintings often reflected visual memories of her years as a child and a young woman. Her paintings are cherished by her friends and family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley Jackson Canada and Helen Isabelle Cox Canada, her husband, Bobby Wayne Comer, a stepson, Bill Comer, and an infant daughter, Sharolyn Rose Sharp. Her four brothers, Stanley Canada and Sherrian Canada, both of Abilene, Selan Canada of Baird, and Severne Canada of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, also preceded her in death.
LaVerne is survived by her son, Samuel E. Webb and wife, Svetlana, of Midland, Texas, granddaughter, Lisa Ann Webb Reese and two greatgranddaughters, Alexis Alvarado and Aubrey Reese of Lubbock. She is survived by daughter, Shirley Anne Webb, and grandson, Devin Blake Powell, both of Lubbock.
