Florine (Rene) Sanders

Rene, 92, passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, in Abilene, Texas.

A visitation will be held on Monday, September 18, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 Hwy 277 South. The funeral service will begin at 11:30 AM following the visitation.

Rene was born on March 3, 1931, in Sterling, Oklahoma to the late Myles Daniel Cross and Ida Winchester Cross. She met her future husband, George (Ebb) Sanders at a dance in Marlow, Oklahoma. They married in Clayton, New Mexico on December 22, 1947. They enjoyed 66 years of marriage together. After her children reached their teenage years, she went to work for the Abilene State School where she retired after 20 years. She enjoyed gardening and baking and was very good at both. She enjoyed visiting with her large family in Oklahoma where the highlight of her year was the annual Cross family reunion.

Rene is survived by her daughter, Cathy Johlke and husband Larry of Houston, TX; son, Greg E. Sanders and wife Darla of Abilene, TX; brother, Gene Cross; sisters, Sharon Cosgrove, Jeannie Darlene Baughn, and Gwen Delcamp; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by brothers, JB, CE, and MD Cross; sisters, Wanda V Cross, Norma Beavers, Margie Butler, Betty Dickson, Carolyn Halbrook; and grandson, Matthew Tyler Johlke.

Rene will be deeply missed by all of her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
