James Wells Vernon, 84, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, September 12, 2013. Visitation will be 4:00 PM till 6:00 PM, Sunday, September, 15, 2013 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral will be 2:00 PM, Monday, September 16, 2013 in the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel.
J. W. or Jay, as he was known by most people, was born at home to William and Annie Vernon on April 7, 1929 near Snyder, Texas. He was the last of their fourteen children to arrive on this earth and the last to go home to heaven. After J. W. graduated from Highland High School in 1946, he joined the U. S. Army, where he served proudly in the ParaTroopers for almost 2 years. Upon his return from Japan, he was married to Donna Fay Martin, his high school sweet heart in 1948. Jay and Donna settled in Abilene, Texas, where they raised their two daughters, and celebrated 53 years of marriage before Donna passed away from cancer in 2001. J. W. was a CPA, who practiced in solo and group practice in Abilene until his retirement. Jay and Donna were avid square dancers, and were members of several local square dance clubs. They had a RV retreat at Lake Brownwood they also enjoyed traveling the United States during retirement, and went with friends on bus tours, RV tours, and cruises.
In 2002, J.W. was married to Janice Stevens. Jay and Janice lived in Abilene during their eleven years together, and they attended the Highland Church of Christ. They enjoyed listening to country music and frequent visits from Janices greatgrandchildren.
J.W. is survived by his wife, Janice Stevens Vernon, of Abilene two daughters, Theresa Shouse and her husband, William, of Frisco, Texas, and Debra Vernon, of Carrollton, Texas four grandchildren: Katie Shouse Egan and her husband Mark, Eric Blackburn, Robert Shouse, and Ross Blackburn Janices two children, Nancy Williams and her husband Bill, Danny Stevens and his wife Beverly, and Janices many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
