Jack Holland Mitchell, 80, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008 at a local nursing home.
Visitation will be Monday, February 18, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy. 277 South. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Rob Nichols officiating; burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park
Jack was born on February 27, 1927 in Houston, TX to Claude and Margaret Mitchell. He was raised in Kansas City, MO with his mom and step dad D.L. Gunnels. He served in the United States Navy. He married Evelyn Elder on November 23, 1949 and they had two daughters, Linda and Cheryl. In 1957 they moved to Abilene. He was a mason and a golfer. In 1963 he and a friend started the Model A Club. Jack was a craftsman of many things, jewelry faceting, stained glass, woodworking, building furniture, wood carving, and working with leather. He also enjoyed music and could play many instruments and he enjoyed restoring old instruments. He and Evelyn also bought and sold antiques.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn Mitchell; two daughters, Linda Mitchell and Cheryl and husband, Gary Ellison; two grandsons and their wives, Shawn and Brylee Ellison and Danny and Stephanie Ellison; two granddaughters Emily Foster and Kalie Ellison; and three great-grandchildren, Abby, Emma and Tyler Ellison.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to The Oaks at Radford Hills nursing home, 725 Medical Dr., Abilene, TX 79601.
