James Byers, 63, of Abilene passed away Monday, November 20, 2017. Visitation will be 2-5 PM Sunday, November 26, 2017 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. A funeral service will be 1:00 PM Monday, November 27, 2017 at Minda Street Church of Christ, 701 Minda Street. Interment will follow at Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories.
James Richard Byers was born on August 22, 1954 to Jo Willie and Bessie Mae Street Byers in Crosbyton, TX. He moved to Abilene in 1984. Richard and his family lived in Lubbock, Lorenzo, and New Home.
He did his formal education in Lorenzo, TX. He attended McMurry University, Lubbock Christian University and Texas Tech University. He became a teacher/coach in 1977 at Lorenzo High School. He went on to coach basketball at New Home High School and from there to Jim Ned High in Tuscola, TX (8 years). He later coached at Jefferson and Madison Middle Schools in Abilene, TX. He retired May 19, 2015. Richard was baptized at Minda Street COC on April 11, 2009 where he remained a faithful member until death.
He married Jo Ann Gibbs Byers on March 25, 1978 and they were married for 39 years. From this unity 2 children were born.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, three brothers, one sister, and a daughter, Edwina Ann Byers (2012).
He leaves to cherish his memories wife, Jo Ann Byers of Abilene; daughters, Erica Johnson of Odessa, TX, Erin Byers of Abilene, TX; four grandchildren, Dalawnia Johnson of Arlington, TX, Eric Johnson and Kobe Robinson both of Odessa, TX and Ayjolan Hall of Abilene, TX; one great granddaughter, Avalei Johnson of Odessa, TX; four sisters; one brother; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
