James Anthony Langan, 79, of Abilene, Texas, passed away on February 5, 2011 at home following a long illness. A viewing will be held on Thursday, February 10 at Elmwood Funeral Home from 67PM, followed by a Rosary beginning at 7PM. The funeral mass is scheduled at 10AM on Friday, February 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 837 Jeannette with burial following at Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene.
Jim was born on September 1, 1931 in ONeill, Holt County, Nebraska to Michael Matthew and Jane Catherine Rotherham Langan. He had one brother and four sisters. Following high school, he joined the US Air Force, and proudly served his country in Vietnam, England, Hawaii, Kansas and Abilene. Jim retired after twenty years of service as a Master Sergeant, and he was a disabled veteran. Jim worked as a jeweler for Busch Jewelers for 25 years. He was a Certified Gemologist, a master watchmaker, and a member of the GIA Association.
Jim was preceded in death by a son, James Anthony Langan Jr., the mother of his children Elisa Apodaca, his brother Joseph Langan, and three of his sisters Mary Betty Langan DeWittFairchild, Bernadine Langan Schneider and Joan Langan Henggeler.
Jim is survived by his wife, Adela Langan of Abilene, his sister Dorothy Langan Sobotka of Norfolk, NE, four daughters: Mary Andrews and husband Jeff of Lubbock, Kathy Cavazos and husband Jesse of Lubbock, Teresa Smith and husband Paul of San Antonio, Christine Hirtzel and husband Dan of Tucson, AZ and three sons: Marvin Langan and wife Jaymie of Dell City, OK, Mike Langan and wife Debbie of Katy, TX and John Langan of Duluth, MN.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, and since 1961 was a 4th degree Knights of Columbus.
Jim was an avid golfer, coached baseball in the Key City Pony League, and loved to sing and play country music on his guitar. He loved sports, especially the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. Jim had a quick wit, and loved a good laugh. He showed a genuine interest in others, helping feed the homebound and showing sympathy to those in need.
