James Edward Nowell died Tuesday, March 23, at Hendrick Hospice after a brief illness. James was born in Colorado City May 31, 1936, to Mary Edna (Blakeney) and William Edmon Nowell. Visitation will 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Thursday, March 25, 2021 at Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 Hwy 277 South. Funeral service will be 10 AM, Friday, March 26, 2021 in the Elmwood Chapel
James attended Wylie schools and Abilene High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy in April, 1956, and was discharged in June, 1966. During his ten-year service, James served on the Submarine Tender "Nereus," San Diego, from 1956-61; on the destroyer "Richard B. Anderson" 1062-63; shore duty in Charleston, South Carolina, from 1963-65; aboard the submarine Tender USS Bushnell from 1965 until his discharge. He married Twila Foreman on January 11, 1957.
Returning to Abilene, James worked for the City of Abilene; Crown Cork and Seal; and Abilene Independent School District, retiring in 2001 after 15 years. James was a longtime member and deacon at Belmont Baptist Church.
James loved fishing and anything related. He was a collector and often restored old things-boats, trailers, motorcycles. He found many "treasures" at garage sales and flea markets and always had some kind of project going. He liked watching old western movies, fishing shows, and the Texas Rangers. He was devoted to his family, his friends, and his church.
Surviving James are his wife, Twila; sons Jimmy Dale Nowell and Damon Jay Nowell (Jackie) of Abilene; as well as grandsons Chris Nowell (Shelly) and Jared Nowell and great-grandchildren Jaden, Jackson and Ella Nowell, all of Brownwood. He is also survived by his sister, Rosemary Hall and husband Joe of Abilene, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by two children, Lorie Lenise Nowell (August 18, 1958) and Eddy Alan Nowell (January 29, 1962), his parents, and his brother, Richard (Dick) Nowell on February 12, 2021.
