It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Janet F. Cate, beloved mother, devoted grandmother, and cherished friend, who left this world peacefully on January 21, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on June 17, 1941, in Amarillo, Texas, Janet's vibrant spirit and boundless compassion touched everyone she encountered throughout her life.
Janet dedicated 34 years of her life as a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) at the Abilene State Supported Living Center, where she fervently advocated for the residents, earning the lasting love and respect of her colleagues and the families she served. Known affectionately as "Momma Jan" or "Momma Cate," she had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel at home, often buying or sharing meals with coworkers. Janet's kindness and nurturing nature were evident in all aspects of her life. Selflessly giving her own coat to the newspaper man that was working one cold morning.
Janet's joy was amplified when surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She cherished the time spent with her family, often creating magical Christmas celebrations that left lasting memories. Her stunning Christmas displays, a testament to her love and creativity, will continue to bring joy to the residents at the Abilene State Supported Living Center, remaining on display during the Christmas Lane.
A devoted military wife, Janet faced life's challenges with grace, always choosing to lift others up. Her love for shopping, especially during the excitement of Black Friday, a few of those purchases would be for various friends with children that might need a little help during the holiday season. Always bringing a spark of joy and adventure that her family fondly remembers.
Janet is survived by her loving daughter Angela Reimann and husband Glen; sons Steven Cate, Christopher Cate and wife Raina, Tony Cate, and Ronnie Cate; grandchildren Chad Cate and Casey Cate and William Reimann; as well as her great-grandchildren C.J., Paisleigh, Xavier, Michael, Randy, Lee, Anna Faircloth, and Gabriel Cate. She is also survived by her brother Robert Hathaway and sister-in-law Patsy Haigwood. Janet's legacy of compassion and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Elmwood funeral home. Funeral service will be on Monday, January 27, 2025, at 11:00 AM, where family and friends will gather to celebrate Janet's remarkable life. For those unable to attend, the ceremony will be broadcasted via Encore Livestreaming on social media channels.
Burial will take place following the service at 12:00 noon on January 27, 2025, at Elmwood Memorial Park located at 5750 Hwy 277 South, Abilene, TX 79606.
As we say our goodbyes, let us remember Janet for her unwavering love, kindness, and the warmth she brought to the lives of so many. May her memories continue to inspire us to live with the same compassion she embodied every day.
